Today Marks The 45th Anniversary Of Israel's Attack On The ‘USS Liberty’
In 1967 the USS Liberty was attacked and nearly sunk by “America’s Special Friend,” the nation of Israel. The
lightly armed Liberty was hit with rockets, napalm, cannon and torpedoes. As American sailors lay dying, a rescue operation was launched from the nearby US Sixth Fleet, but called off by President Johnson, who vented: “I don't
give a damn if the ship is sunk and all the sailors die. I don't want to embarrass an ally.” When the attack was
over, 34 Americans were dead and 171 wounded.
